Abstract:
On September 30, 1942, Governor Broughton issued a proclamation designating October 1-21 as a period of statewide salvage for the war effort. In Greenville, residents responded by donating many items to the scrap pile located in front of the Pitt County Courthouse. These included two hearses donated by the Flanagan Funeral Home. The Double-Cola Bottling Company contributed four tons of bottle caps. Mrs. Elizabeth Kearney donated a Civil War shell found wile digging in her yard. Lelia Higgs and sisters gave metal doll furniture. J. H. Rose gave the old Evans Street school bell. And Mrs. J. L. Fleming gave an iron ā€œSā€ from the chimney of the Fleming house, said to be over one hundred years old.
