Abstract:

1940s Pasquotank County experienced and influx of military personal and wartime industry. Elizabeth City location on the Pasquotank River made it the hub of military activity and the only sizeable town in the entire county. A Coast Guard Air Station accommodated both land and water planes. The Naval Air Station launched dirigibles which patrolled Atlantic waters. The city's shipyard was sequestered to build tugs for the Navy. Such a large population influx forced the city to develop housing projects like the Enfield Apartments to accommodate its new population. During peaceful times, agriculture dominated Pasquotank County economics with the local population depending on livestock and produce for income.
