Abstract:
Silas Coley died in March 1967 at the age of 86. He was one of the founders of the Durham Life Insurance Company and an avid outdoorsman. Coley, along with P. K. Gravely, Staton Inscoe, and others, formed the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and led the successful campaign that created the North Carolina Wildlife Commission by an act of the 1947 General Assembly. He served as its chairman for the first seven months of its existence and inaugurated the system of electing new officers at the beginning of each year. The article includes names of commission members who served during the years 1947 – 1972.

On June 30, 1972, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission completed twenty-five years of service to the sportsmen and citizens of the state. The article describes the commission's early years and examines its various divisions, such as the Division of Wildlife Protection and Division of Inland Fisheries.
