Victor Ekpuk's new mural at the North Carolina Museum of Art was commissioned to augment the museum’s expanded African art gallery. Rendered in white chalk on a black wall, Ekpuk's symbolic composition forms an abstracted figure wrapping long arms around the perimeter. The mural’s meaning reflects the current social-political climate in America, but can be interpreted several ways.

Eudora Welty photographed daily life in the South before she became a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer. Through September 3, the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh will display eighteen of Welty’s early photos in its new exhibition, Looking South. The photographs feature portraits of farmers, churchgoers, porch sitters, and sharecroppers.

Its accomplishments noted by the author included support of the NCMoA’s “Health Explorations” exhibit; the NCMoA’s “The Secret World Inside You” exhibit; and raising funds for the Association of Science-Technology Centers conference hosted by the NCMoA.

Abstract:
The Museum recently acquired six new works of art and is opening a new video gallery in the East Building. Giovanni Martinelli’s Memento Mori: Death Comes to the Table circa 1630-38, Yink Shonibare’s, MBE Wind Sculpture II 2013, Flemish, Antwerp School’s Saint Jerome in His Study circa 1560-70, Hieronymus Mittnacht’s Torah Shield 1747-49 are four of the works that were acquired. The artist of each work, an illustration of the work, and a description of the subject and style are detailed. A preview of the upcoming exhibits in the new video gallery is also included and will feature the work of James Nares.

The new exhibit Small Treasures: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals and Their Contemporaries will be on display in the Meymandi Exhibition Gallery through January. This exhibition is the first ever to focus on small portraits by Dutch and Flemish painters from the seventeenth century. During the seventeenth century, portrait painting was not highly regarded, but the group of artists exhibited elevated the status of portraiture with their skill. The exhibition is previewed by describing the history of the period, describing portraits painted by Vermeer and Rembrandt , and describing the impact of masterpieces.

The new exhibit Sacred Motherhood: Mother-and-Child Representations form the Permanent Collection explores the symbolism of a woman caring for a child. The exhibit brings together 13 pieces of art from numerous cultures and spanning thousands of years. The exhibit attempts to show the multiple phases of motherhood - from pregnancy to the pain of separation through death.

A new exhibit in the North Carolina Gallery titled "Line, Touch, and Trace" presents hand-drawn works by 13 North Carolina artists. All of these works explore drawing in its relationship to thought processes. The curator of the exhibition Edie Carpenter is interviewed about the exhibition. Carpenter explains why the exhibition was created, how the artists were selected, how the artists’ materials help them achieve their goals, and what drawing offers the viewer that painting or sculpture does not.

Four of the featured artists of Estampas de la raza are interviewed about the challenges they face in creating their art, how their cultural background affects their work, and how Estampas continues to influence them. Vincent Valdez, Oscar Magallanes, Ceasr Martinez, and Sonia Romero are all interviewed. The four artists all contributed prints to the exhibition and discuss how being Latino has affected their work and perspective. The exhibition highlights contemporary prints created by Latino and Hispanic artists.

Photographer Brian Ulrich’s Copia: Retail, Thrift, and Dark Stores, 2001-2011exhibition shows a decade-long investigation of consumer culture. The photographs show the excess of big-box stores, the discarded items at thrift stores, and the landscape of empty shopping centers in urban areas. Ulrich’s photography is intended to help us learn about our behaviors, habits, comforts, and purpose. The exhibit starts with the events of September 11, 2001 with the “call to spend” by politicians through the financial collapse of 2008 to the present.

The exhibition Edvard Munch: Symbolism in Print is currently on display and focuses on the idea of death in sex. Munch believed that in love, individuals lost their personal identities and this idea is seen in this collection of prints. His complicated prints of relationships and feelings between men and women often convey anguish, despair, lust, and passion. Munch’s personal experiences and a preview of the exhibition are detailed.
