Abstract:
The Gratitude Train, forty-nine boxcars long, was France’s gift-filled gesture to America for its assistance in the closing days of World War II. Participants in the arrival of North Carolina’s boxcar included Governor Kerr Scott and News and Observer editor Jonathan Daniels. Preserved items such as this boxcar and a woodcut portrait of Abraham Lincoln continue to testify international goodwill.

Abstract:
The term coined by Jonathan Daniels in his News and Observer write-up from the 1920s still applies. The unpainted aristocracy is associated with families such as the Outlaws and Worthingtons, who have had cottages in the area for as long as five generations. The cottages carry the weight of aristocratic history through family legends, such as a Worthington ancestor laid in his Civil War regalia in the cottage’s dining room. The cottages attest hardiness against hurricanes such as the ones in 1898 and 1918 because of Stephen Twine, credited with designing and erecting these summer homes.

Abstract:
Considered a fixture at Raleigh’s Capitol Square is a local whose identity became synonymous with the birds who followed him, ones considered more of a novelty than irritant. Jesse Broyles’ peanut vending, as much as his companionship with these pigeons, merited his obituary in News and Observer and enduring reputation in this part of the state capital.

Abstract:
Nell Battle Lewis began writing a column for the 'News and Observer' in 1921. Lewis, a supporter of white public motherhood and white supremacy, advocated a agenda of social reform that included the rights of textile workers and women. During World War II, Lewis was unable to balance her political ideology with the changing world. Until her death in 1956, Lewis called for white mothers to protect their families from liberals, civil rights activists, Communists, and the federal government.

Changes are underway at The News & Observer, Raleigh’s newspaper. Frank Daniels III has been hired as the new editor. Daniels is committed to making the newspaper appeal to a larger, mainstream audience. Readers are concerned that the quality of reporting and the paper's liberal identity are diminishing under Daniels. Additionally, Daniels' lack of experience and the paper's perceived nepotism are being called into question. Daniels' family owns the newspaper at which he was hired to edit.

Abstract:
Raleigh’s The News and Observer will see its longtime editor retire at the end of 1990. Claude Sitton managed the newsroom and the editorial pages for 22 years at The N&O. Frank Daniels III will take over the newsroom while publisher Frank Daniels, Jr. will oversee the editorial page. Some are concerned with Daniels III’s lack of experience in the newspaper industry and how the paper might change under his leadership. Daniels III has worked in newspapers for a total of 3 years before taking over while Sitton was the national news editor of The New York Times prior to working at The N&O.
