Abstract:
A new species of crayfish is the only known member of its subgenus east of the Blue Ridge physiographic province. It is endemic to the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico river basins of North Carolina, occurring in the Coastal Plain and the eastern edge of the Piedmont Plateau.

Though the condition of the Neuse River has improved over the years after textile mills and other factories stopped dumping waste into it, environmentalists agree it has a long way to go before the river quality is back to what it should be.

Abstract:
The rivers and estuaries of coastal North Carolina have experienced unprecedented increases in nutrient loading over the last fifty years. This has resulted in a proliferation of water quality problems including algae blooms, anoxic water and fish kills. The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources Science Advisory Council recommends continuation of an intensive long-term monitoring and modeling program for the Neuse River Estuary.
