Ciompi is the Triangle area’s only professional string quartet. The Duke based group has received some positive national reviews and are releasing several recordings in the near future. The background of the group members and the challenges with maintaining a group are profiled. The group is actively looking for donors so that they can focus performing local and well-known compositions for the public.

The Allen Boys are the state’s only touring Sacred Steel band. The Sacred Steel musical tradition focuses steel guitar being used in praise and worship songs. Matt Douglas, a Raleigh musician, became known in the Triangle area for his saxophone work with the Chris Boerner Quartet and his own band, The Proclivities. Douglas is now playing with two instrumental jazz bands known as The Hot at Nights, and the Mountain Goats. The Hot at Night has a new record, Three Kids, features music influenced by local musicians and diverse musical styles.
