A music performance at East Carolina College (now University) almost didn't happen on the evening of February 5, 1958. The Dave Brubeck Quartet integrated the school for the first time that very night when school authorities were pressured to allow the Quartet's one African American musician, Eugene Wright to be on stage.

Troy Medlin, also known as T. Roy, is leader of the metal band Sourvein. Their fourth studio record, Aquatic Occult, fully embraces the inspiration of the North Carolina coastline. The band incorporated recordings of the surf at Kure Beach, sonar, and bountiful reverb to evoke an oceanic atmosphere.

The Art of Cool Festival in Durham has added rappers, DJs, and neo-soul singers to the line-up of jazz and hip-hop musicians. Few young working groups are more emblematic of such a mix than The Internet, a Los Angeles-based, Grammy-nominated R&B/soul band. The Internet is based on a shared musical appreciation of the power of hip-hop and the sophistication of jazz.

Carrboro’s Squirrel Nut Zippers led the swing music revival of the late nineties, making their way into mainstream radio. The shadow of litigation, acrimonious departures, and the divorce of Jimbo Mathus and Katharine Whalen caused the band to fall apart a few years after their second album Hot. Only two members of the original band are on board for this year’s twentieth anniversary tour for Hot.

The Cockman family performed gospel hymns for nearly 25 years; the traveled from Florida to New York performing for churches, festivals, weddings, funerals, and more. The family group also teaches others to play music and sing and have recorded their own albums.

These include the Twin City Choristers, a group founded in Winston-Salem in 1957; the Sea Notes Choral Society, founded in Brunswick County in 1974; at Duke University The Pitchforks (men's) and Out of the Blue (women's) and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill the Clef Hangers (men's) and the Loreleis (women's) a cappella groups.
