The Beat Making Lab is a winner of the 2014 Indie Art Awards. The UNC Chapel Hill group puts on classes, international residencies, runs a community youth center in Chapel Hill, and operates a backpack-sized recording studio. They recently received a one million dollar grant from the State Department to fund their Next Level program which uses popular music and dance to foster diplomatic goodwill and model conflict resolution through collaboration. The group has traveled to Senegal, Panama, Fiji, and Ethiopia teaching hip-hop, making beats, and recording music.

Harry Davidson inherited an orchestra desperately in need of leadership to develop its potential. His shared secrets of success included Mozart and Haydn as teaching tools for students and a passion for teaching. By year three of his leadership, faculty and students’ heightened morale inspired Davidson to start planning programs by the season rather than the concert.

Girls Rock NC is a winner of a 2014 Indie Art Award. The group runs a camp, after school programs, and retreats for adults. Their main initiative is a music camp for girls 7-16 to help them learn to raise their voices as young women through music. The Chapel Hill group hosts sessions on body confidence, the history of women in music, and leadership. Girls Rock NC helps girls gain confidence and works for social justice.

Paul Jeffrey, a saxophonist and Duke music professor, has been a major force in pioneering jazz education. He has also played an important role in documenting the achievements of local jazz musicians, such as Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane, through transcriptions of their music.

The Basic Education Program has music objectives at every grade level. However, at some Triangle schools, limited funding for resources and teachers, lack of time, and scheduling can make meeting objectives difficult.
