Brinson grew up in Morehead City during the 1920s and 1930s. One of her favorite pastimes was visiting a small general store run by the local apothecary. The store carried kitchen staples and sweets. Brinson recalls the many different penny candy she liked as a child.

Chartered in 1858, Morehead City was founded on Sheppards Point. One of the first industries, the railroad, was established to link Morehead City to settlements along the Mississippi River. While this venture ultimately failed, a number of small houses and businesses were erected over the following decades. During the Civil War, many structures were used by Union soldiers who made additional improvements to infrastructure. Post-war, various civil works were erected to modernize the City.

In 2000, the Carteret County Historical Society purchased a new property in Morehead City. Built during the 1950s, the structure had been a Colonial Store, grocery chain, and furniture store prior to the Society’s acquisition. The property history, however, extends back to the early 1900s. First used as a residential plot, the associated house belonged to G. L. Arthur and his family. Arthur, a local fish dealer, ran a fish house on Bogue Sound. Two of his children became teachers at the local school.

In the second article addressing the history of the Carteret County Historical Society building, the author discusses property documents for the Arthur household, the first residential home on the Society’s lot. Following occupation by the Arthurs, the Colonial Store was built on the property. The largest grocery store in Morehead City, the establishment was well regarded by local community members.

This article discusses some of the author’s earliest memories of Morehead City. Visiting family during WWII, the author recalls the blackout practices put into effect to deter enemy attacks on shipping vessels. Houses and cars blacked out their lights while an alarm would sound in town to alert residents of nightfall. Post-war, the author describes local vernacular boatbuilding traditions and boat usage.

Frank Salisbury was editor of the Morehead City newspaper between 1924 and 1964. A photographer and founder of the Carteret County Historical Society, Salisbury was interested in preserving and documenting Carteret County’s heritage, both historic and modern. He made an effort to record many historic structures in town, and was a well published author on the history of Morehead City.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Dr. Ben Royal worked as a physician and surgeon in Morehead City. During the Second World War, Dr. Royal anticipated increased use of hospital facilities and was responsible for the installation of a 32 bed emergency wing. This wing continued to function until 1967. Dr. Royal himself worked in Morehead City from 1911 to 1962.

In 1992, a Morehead City resident caught sight of a ghostly apparition aboard the tug LOCKWOOD. Purchased in 1983 for scrap, the vessel was reportedly haunted. Eyewitnesses describe a ghostly figure walking around the deck. The author and owner of the vessel decided to investigate, but were unable to trace the history of the tug or past incidents on board.

The first scout movement in Morehead City was created in 1913. The leaders of this early troop were actively involved in the community. As such, they joined the First World War effort which led to a series of short term scoutmasters. During the 1920s and 1930s, the troop reformed to become Troop 39, which met at the local school through the Second World War. Following the war years, the troop again disbanded to be eventually reformed as 130. Today, this troop is sponsored by the Parkview Baptist Church.

Dr. Ben Royal started the first Morehead City hospital with support from the U.S. Public Health Service and local community members. Edith Broadway was hired as a nurse in 1912 to assist with operations. Her work, however, far exceeded her title. Broadway and Royal worked tirelessly to assist residents of Morehead City and surrounding areas; beginning with only seven beds, the duo worked to expand service to eighteen patients. Following the flu epidemic of 1918, Royal and Broadway continued to raise funds for a larger, more adequate facility. Their work manifested in a new building and improved medical facilities. The two worked side by side through the Second World War. Overall, Broadway dedicated 31 years to the Morehead City hospitals.

The capital of Carteret County has had a long history in the Crystal Coast. Dubbed Fish Town in the early 1700s, the town received its next moniker from John Motley Morehead in the 1850s. Incorporated as Morehead City in 1861, the town lives up to its original identity through its famous Blue Marlin Tournament, Seafood Festival, and Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant.
