Western North Carolina played an important role in the state’s economic and occupational development, through its railroads delivering raw materials such as lumber and mica across the state. Pictorial evidence Western Carolina University preserves includes the accompanying photo of the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Through such endeavors, acknowledgment of railroads’ place in North Carolina history chugging along.

Abstract:
Conquistador Juan Pardo intended to offer Spain a land route from the Appalachia to Mexico, where the country had established silver mines. The threat of Indian attacks at the Great Smokies’ slopes in Tennessee prompted Pardo to abandon the mission and his three forts. The accompanying image of a map created during the time period illustrates the land area representing the present day Southeastern states where Pardo conducted his two expeditions.

Abstract:
The North Carolina Mining Museum opened at the McKinney Mine last month. The museum tells the story of mining in North Carolina, beginning with the Cherokee Indians and ending soon after the end of World War II. The museum manager, Charles Robert Buchanan, worked in the mine with his father. For a fee, visitors can dig for precious metals at the underground museum's dump areas.
