Twenty miles north of Charlotte and home to Davidson College, the town of Davidson is the richest and best-educated in Mecklenburg County. Last year, a plan to sell public land to build a development called Luminous precipitated the formation of Save Davidson. The group is pledging to promote government transparency and preserve the town’s character.

Throughout its history, Charlotte has moved progressively forward. However, in 2016 the urban-rural divide became clearer in North Carolina and in the United States. House Bill 2 and the 2016 election both resulted in trying times for Charlotte, forcing city officials to seriously ponder how to move forward.

Charlotte had a difficult year between the passage of House Bill 2, the loss of hosting rights for national events, deep political divisions, and the death of Keith Scott and the riots that followed. Despite all of this, Charlotte has earned attention internationally and been named Business North Carolina’s 2016 Mover and Shaker of the Year.

Abstract:
In 2014, nearly 52,000 Central American children arrived in the U.S., 2,000 of which made their way to North Carolina. The Charlotte-area nonprofit, Legal Services of Southern Piedmont (LSSP), helps these children in legal cases through their program called the Immigration Assistance Project (IAP).
