Driving over 3,000 miles, folklorists surveyed the cultural qualities that are distinctive to Washington, Tyrrell, Hyde, Bertie, Beaufort, and Dare Counties. Topics in the survey included a Sense of Place, including homecomings and place names; Occupations; Community Life, including religion and visiting; and Domestic Life, including quilting and soapmaking.
