Abstract:
From free turnip seed, the tie-breaking ballot for building new courthouse was cast. From being built in Lapland, Zebulon Vance predicted the new courthouse would flourish. With a few years, Lapland was renamed Marshall, and a third courthouse was built. Today, the town renamed for a chief justice and its symbol of justice testify to Vance’s vision.

Madison County is a mountain county covering 450 square miles. It has three incorporated towns--Marshall, Mars Hill, and Hot Springs; a population of 20,000; and a public school system of 2,500. The county has an abundance of natural resources and beauty. Pisgah National Forest covers almost half the county, and the Appalachian Trail runs along the northern border. Westbrook describes various places that visitors will enjoy.

Continuing his travels to North Carolina's counties, Goerch visits Madison County. Located in the mountains, it covers 450 square miles. The county is one of the leading producers of pure-bred cattle as well as being the state's largest grower of burley tobacco. Marshall, the county seat, has the courthouse and business district located on a narrow strip of land beside the French Broad River, while the high school stands on an island in the river.

Abstract:
The tiny St. Jude's Chapel of Hope in Trust, North Carolina was built in 1992 and is open to all travelers passing through who need rest or reflection. The chapel has become an important sanctuary to locals and tourists alike.
