Abstract:

Soaring up to two hundred feet, the tulip poplar is North Carolina's largest tree. Settlers used its timber for cabins, its bark for siding, and collected honey from its handsome blossom.

Abstract:

The 200 year-old Davie Poplar, named for William R. Davie, is possibly the oldest tulip poplar in the nation and a link for generations of students and faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Abstract:

In Davie County stands what could possible be North Carolina's largest tree. The poplar tree is over twenty-six feet around and is twice as tall as surrounding trees. It is estimated that the tree is over two-hundred years old. Difficult to find, the tree is located on a private farm. Hikers must traverse creeks and a swamp to find the old poplar.
