This workshop promoted daylighting—the use of natural light—as a viable alternative to artificial light, which had been the standard for many businesses since the 1960s. Factors used in the presentation were positively impacting the visual environment, instilling a sense of comfort, increasing work productivity, and encouraging the creation of different building forms.

There have been many lighthouse keepers at Hatteras. This year the families of those lighthouse keepers got together to remember them all. Generations were brought together as they reminisced and caught up on family history.

Unaka Benjamin Jennette, born in 1882, served thirty-eight years in the Lighthouse Service. From 1919 to 1937, Jennette was keeper of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, before the lighthouse was put in the hands of United States Coast Guard. Jennette was responsible for the care and management of the light and station, especially during severe storms and hurricanes.

In the 1920s, Midgett's father, James O. Casey, was assigned as lighthouse keeper at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. She recounts her experiences during the several years she and her family lived there.
