Annotated letter from John Jacobs to Walton H. Riggs, South Mills, NC, Mar. 2, 1862. John Jacobs was a German, who with no one to care for his eleven year old son during the Civil War, had him enlist with him for war in 1861 as a musician. John Jacobs was recognized in the war for his Drum & Bugle Corps. After the war, Jacobs became a prominent businessman and organized several bands in South Mills, Elizabeth City and Edenton, NC.
