Abstract:
Continuing his travels to North Carolina's counties, Goerch visits Hyde County. It is a paradise for hunters and fishermen, with all kinds of waterfowl and bounty from the ocean. It is one of the oldest state counties, and was named for Edward Hyde, who was the Governor of the colony. It has a number of interesting places, including Swanquarter's \"rambling church,\" Lake Mattamuskeet, and Ocracoke Island, where the notorious pirate Blackbeard fought his last battle.

Abstract:
You can't get much further east an still be on the mainland than in Engelhard, Stumpy Point, and Mann's Harbor. Engelhard is in the extreme easterly part of Hyde County while Stumpy Point and Mann's Harbor lie in Dare. Although Goerch says there isn't much to see in these small village communities, they are beautiful and peaceful, and full of the charm of coastal North Carolina.

Abstract:
Shellfish—their lives, the industry’s livelihood—looked bleak when Red Tide rolled in. The future became brighter with its causes’ discovery: inadequate treatment of human and animal wastes. It also brightened with the solutions: improvement of septic tank surveillance and testing procedures. A chart reiterated the need for improvement, with counties ranging from Dare to New Hanover, waterways from Hyde County’s Kitty Creek to Harkers Island’s Back Sound.

Abstract:
Hyde County is OUR STATE magazine's featured county of the month. It is one of the state's largest counties in land area, at 643 square miles, but with only 5,413 residents, it has the second smallest population of North Carolina's one hundred counties. Hyde is one of the oldest counties and was named for Edward Hyde, a colonial governor of North Carolina. There are no incorporated towns in the county, and the area remains dotted with small communities and tiny crossroads. The county has abundant wildlife and four National Wildlife Refuges are located entirely or partially within its borders. A number of significant historic buildings are located there, including the Octagon House in Engelhard and the Lake Mattamuskeet Lodge.
