At the turn of the 20th century North Carolina was an attractive destination for many of the nation's elite hunting enthusiasts. The Piedmont area was especially prized for hunting of wild quail. Numerous hunting clubs and lodges were established, beginning in 1894 with the Thomasville Shooting Club.

Big game can now be hunted legally with a handgun for the first time in North Carolina. Hunters are urged to use a handgun caliber that they know would dispatch the quarry with a single, well-placed shot.

For the first time in several years, North Carolina waterfowl hunters will have the opportunity to take canvasback ducks during a special season in coastal waters. Regulations were also adopted allowing hunters to use handguns for big game during the regular gun seasons.
