Adams-Millis Hosiery Company of High Point is one of the unknown giants in the textile industry. For seventy-five years the company has been the world's largest manufacturer of private-label hosiery for many of the country's mass merchandising retailers. Now the company is launching its own brand.

Abstract:
In 1920, Julius Ward Harriss and his son-in-law W. Conner Covington founded Harriss & Covington Hosiery Mills in High Point. Their first product was ladies' mercerized cotton stockings, but they later switched to men's hosiery. Today, Harriss & Covington employs over 230 people, with weekly production approximately 20,000 dozen pair.

Fifty years ago Gurney Harriss Kearns left a successful career as a furniture industry executive to venture into the field of hosiery manufacture. Today the company he founded in High Point, Crown Mills, Inc., is one of the country's leading hosiery producers. The article traces the history and growth of the company.
