Abstract:
Countering North Carolina’s illiteracy rate, the highest in the nation by the 19th century, was the creation of libraries. Libraries, which also made it possible by the 1940s for almost all North Carolinians to access free material, included Wilson, Morganton, Weldon Memorial, and Halifax County.
