Abstract:
Horne Creek Farm, established by Thomas Houser between 1875 and 1880 in Surry County, has been selected by the Div. of Archives and History to be the first living history farm. Chosen from 5,000 entries, it was designated a State Historic Site in 1987.

Abstract:
The Horne Creek Living Historical Farm, located near the Yadkin River in Surry County, gives visitors the feel of farm life in 1900. Owned by the Hauser family, it was farmed before and after the Civil War. The Hauser family was self-sufficient, raising livestock and growing crops for food. What few things they purchased were sugar, salt, and flavorings, like vanilla.

Abstract:
The Pick Shin Nature Center, located outside the town of Dobson in Surry County, was developed as a living monument to history as part of an experiment in environmental education. The center features a replica of an old school house, a genuine one-room country store, restored farm equipment, and a log house built and occupied in 1875. In honor of the United States Bicentennial, the center will offer special educational programs recreating farm scenes of the past.

Abstract:
The Horne Creek Living Historical Farm in Surry County was a recently added to the state's list of historic sites. As part of the farmsteads preservation, Ghita Tuttle, granddaughter of the original owner Alexander Vest, was interviewed. Her oral history, family photos, and artifacts will be displayed on site and add invaluable evidence about northwest Piedmont farming.
