Abstract:
With the rapid expansion of industry in North Carolina, emphasis has also been on the need for road modernization. The network of state-supported highways totals nearly 70,000 miles, the largest state-operated system in the country. Although initially suffering from being unable to keep up with the pace of growth in the state, the highway system is beginning to reach modern level.

Abstract:
The engineering firm of Parsons, Brinkerhoff, Hall and MacDonald presented a report to the North Carolina State Highway and Public Works Department which bears long term implications on the highway system. The report outlines deficiencies in the state's system, steps to correct them, and alternative ways of finance.
