An agricultural county settled prior to 1707 and officially established in 1760, Hertford County, encompasses three rivers and over 130,000 acres of forests. Prior to the Civil War, the region was sustained primarily via the plantation system. Expansion into maritime and modern industries came in the late-19th-century in the form of port trade, fishing, hosiery mills, ice plants, and lumber.

Richard Jordan Gatling invented the Gatling gun, a revolutionary weapon first used during the Civil War. The author discusses Gatling's family history, his early life in Hertford County, and his other entrepreneurial endeavors before he created the Gatling gun. The Gallery Theatre in Ashokie, North Carolina celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The history of the theatre began with the Richards Theatre—the former name of the theatre—which closed in the 1950s. Beginning in 1965, a group set out to revive the theatre, resulting in the opening of the Gallery Theatre in 1966. The theatre has since become a staple of Ashokie culture.

Early Station’s depot closing can be easily explained: Atlantic Coast’s ceasing operation meant the closure of a station once providing passage to towns like Ahoskie and Norfolk three times a day. The more recent spelling of the town’s name as Earleys can be explained as an error; it was named for the Early family. As for the light seen around the abandoned depot, it has yielded no explanation and much speculation. Speculations for this phenomenon: stories always involving a man’s decapitation and everlasting search by the man’s spirit for his head.
