Abstract:
John Harvey, a prosperous New Bern merchant, built one of the first brick houses there in the 1790s. This was a rare thing, since most houses, great and small, were wooden. The family held the house until the 1870s. It has had several uses since, including a boarding house.

This insider’s perspective of the Harvey Mansion discloses its history, including its time as an apartment building. Also explored were architectural aspects such as closet space, which the author declared was once an amenity that only the wealthy could afford.

This historic house was home in the mid-1960s to the newly created Craven Industrial Educational Center. The center, soon expanding beyond the three rooms on the third floor, necessitated the construction and purchase of adjacent buildings. By the late 1960s, student body growth, expansion of programs, and referendum-generated monies made possible the campus where Craven Community College is today.

House researchers seek to know who owned property and when. The Harvey Mansion, built in the 1790s, and its surrounding property, have been sold a number of times. As of 1997, the house was functioning as a restaurant.

The housed, a representative of late eighteenth century life, lost a fragment of its post-Colonial origins through the roof’s remodeling. Another fragment of that time lost was the maritime commerce that made the building of the house possible for John Harvey.
