As tourism and travel are becoming redefine and stretched in North Carolina, so is the golfing industry. Southeast coastal counties like Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender are seeing a golfing boom thanks to improved access and facilities, while golf courses and clubs are leading to growth in hotels, recreational amenities, and homes.

Golfing is big business in the state. The North Carolina Division of Tourism, Film, and Sports Development has actively promoted golfing to travelers from England and Canada for years. In 2007, golfing promotions are taking place in Germany. The promotions go beyond just a trip to the tees and highlight the state's distinctive lodgings, food and wine, arts, shopping, and historic attractions. Wright highlights promotional activities to attract golfers.

Methodist University’s Jerry Hogge is fighting the struggling golf economy. Hogge is director of the PGA Golf Management program at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC and is working to educate the sport’s leaders. The program prepares students for a career in the golf industry and every graduate from 1989 has landed a job in the field. Hogge’s work is detailed.
