Fisheries management in North Carolina passed new regulations for saltwater fishing, and will consider fishery reserves. While the regulations may help stabilize fish populations, there is considerable debate over proposed fishing license and gear requirements. Saltwater fishermen and charter boat operators are concerned how their businesses will be affected.

The North Carolina Saltwater Fishing Tournament is an added challenge to anglers who fish the Tar Heel State this spring. Now in its third year, the state-sponsored contest awards citations for twenty-four fish species which surpass minimum qualifying weights. In addition to saltwater fishing, there are also excellent freshwater fishing opportunities throughout the state.

Frank “Jake” Jakub offers a personal anecdote of surf fishing in Corolla, North Carolina on January 3, 2006. That afternoon, Jakub came upon a bunker slick about a quarter-mile off the beach that was over ten miles long. Jakub describes how he caught fifty-five striped bass at this location over the course of two days.

New restrictions have been placed on the size and creel limits of several saltwater fish in North Carolina. These new rules are effective January 14 and apply to cobia and certain species of snapper and grouper.
