In autumn, the Blue Ridge Parkway bustles with people and the leaves explode with color. From the Cumberland Knob near Mount Airy to Cherokee, the parkway passes a number of beautiful overlooks with spectacular views of the landscape.

The North Carolina mountains cover an area of 6,000 square miles and contain the highest peaks east of the Mississippi River. They are also the site of spectacular autumn leaf displays. Each year tourists flock to such areas as Flat Rock and Cumberland Knob to view them.

Viewing fall foliage colors in the state's mountains is increasing, with almost as many vacationers there in October as in July. Old Trudge suggests seven tours, with maps, of the mountain regions. While the trips do not cover everything, they do cover a lot.
