Many resource professionals believe the future of outdoor activities will be directly linked with user behavior and the public’s preconceptions of that behavior. To help shape ethical attitudes toward the environment, programs should educate outdoor users about their environmental responsibilities.

The future of hunting and other forms of outdoor recreation was the topic at the first North Carolina Conference on Outdoor Ethics, sponsored by the N.C. Wildlife Federation in late September. Representatives from conservation groups, landowners, and government agencies discussed ways of improving the image of outdoor users and increasing educational efforts.

State Representative Jimmy Dixon gave a speech that was similar to Abraham Lincoln speech during the 1859 Wisconsin Agricultural Fair. This speech was for a bill being passed that protects pig farmer and the effects the farms have on residents and the environment. Dixon was seen as accepting money from the “Big Pork industry.”

James Valentine, a North Carolina photographer, and Marguerite Schumann, a writer in Chapel Hill, collaborated on a new book called, “North Carolina.” The book features photographs and text aiming to inspire a sense of urgency about the need for environmental stewardship. Images capture natural areas, as well as cultural and historical landmarks throughout North Carolina.
