Professor of emergency medicine Laurence Katz started UNC’s hypothermia program in 2007, and recently formed Hibernaid, a company dedicated to creating new drugs for therapeutic hypothermia. Katz hopes to expand hypothermia programs and research to other hospitals.

Nationwide, hospital emergency departments are seeing an increase in patient visits. A death of primary care physicians, coupled with a rise in uninsured patients, is among the contributing factors. In the National Report Card on State of Emergency Medicine, North Carolina an overall C- with areas of failing in access to emergency care and medical liability.

In 1980 and 1981, data were collected by the State Health Planning Agency in North Carolina concerning emergency room utilization by Medicaid eligible patients. This report presents a summary of these data and analysis. Results show that high emergency room use is correlated with a low rate of use of primary care services.
