John Ehringhaus, born in Elizabeth City, NC, studied law at UNC Chapel Hill and was admitted to the bar and opened a law office in Elizabeth City, NC in 1903. In 1905, Ehringhaus served in the NC House of Representatives representing Pasquotank County. He co-authored the bill creating East Carolina Teacher’s Training School and supported legislation creating a high school system in NC. In 1910, Ehringhaus, was elected solicitor for the First Judicial District and in 1932 was elected Governor of North Carolina.

Andrew Pendleton, a native of Nixonton, Pasquotank Co., NC, worked as a mail carrier and in a drugstore. In 1884, he graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He set up his first practice in Coinjock, NC, then in Key West, FL and later in Elizabeth City. Pendleton established the Standard Drug Company, was postmaster of Elizabeth City and was president of the Elizabeth City Board of Alderman. Pendleton organized and was president of the Carolina Banking and Trust Company and the Pasquotank Investment Corporation.

Clinton Levering Cobb, a native of Elizabeth City, NC, was a merchant, became a lawyer in 1867 and served (1869-1875) as a Republican member of the US Congress. He was active in the establishment of the Life Saving Stations on the NC coast. He died at age 37 in Elizabeth City, NC.

James Green Martin, a native of Elizabeth City, NC, graduated from West Point in 1840, and served in the Mexican War where he lost his right arm in battle. He resigned his commission in the US Army in 1861 and offered his services to his home State. Martin was commissioned a Captain in the cavalry, later appointed Adjutant General of North Carolina. On Sept. 28, 1861, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the North Carolina forces. He had several victories and after the war, Martin studied and practiced law.

Tamsen Donner, a native of Massachusetts, came to Elizabeth City, NC in 1824 to teach botany at the Elizabeth City Academy. In 1829, she married Tully Dozier, of Camden Co., NC. She lost her husband and children to fever and she moved to Springfield, IL to care for her brothers children. While there she continued to teach botany and in 1839 remarried to George Donner. They had several children and in 1846 they set out on the overland trail to California. The Donner party got caught up in the snow in the Sierra Mountains. Tamsen Donner would not leave her sick husband, but managed to get all of the children to safety at Sutter’s Fort, California.
