Piedmont Electric and a solar energy developer, both based in Hillsborough, North Carolina, are making progress toward lowering the cost of solar-generated electricity. They have developed a new model of smaller power plants that can generate electricity economically and environmentally safe. The new grid system of solar “trees” will provide power to residents in Caswell County.

When Nash Community College started its Electric Lineman Technology two-year degree program in 1998, the state became home to the second such program in the country. Kansas was first. The 64-credit-hour degree enhances the lineman's communication, technical, and safety skills.

Vern Taylor, general manager of Roanoke Electric Membership Corporation, has been called a “self-made” businessman. Although he holds no college degree, Taylor manages a corporation serving seven counties, and has helped to improve the availability of low-cost, dependable electric service in northeastern North Carolina. This article discusses Taylor’s background and contributions to rural electricity development.
