Abstract:

Thomas Eastchurch was serving as Surveyor General of Albemarle, NC in 1669. He worked his way to be speaker of the Albemarle Assembly in 1675 and wrested the Governorship of North Carolina from John Jenkins. After many years of factional fighting, the Lord’s Proprietors appointed Eastchurch as Governor of the Albemarle Precinct. Eastchurch was slow in returning to North Carolina and Culpepper’s Rebellion happened in late 1677 to keep Eastchurch from entering the North Carolina colony. In late December 1677, the Deputy Governor of Virginia sent a proclamation to Albemarle ordering the colonists to lay down their arms. Soon after the proclamation was issued, Eastchurch became ill and died in Virginia in early 1678.
