Abstract:
2005 marks the 73rd football season at East Carolina University. The football team was started by C. Kenneth Beatty, who received no pay for coaching. The victory bell, located on the west side of Memorial Gymnasium, was given to ECU by the Veterans Club. It was to be rung after games won by the Pirates. Plans to secure the bell began in 1951, and it was officially presented on October 10, 1953. ECU is holding a Victory Bell Commemorative Service on March 29, 2005.

Abstract:
Today people describe the ECU/NCSU football games with as much zeal as fans described ECU's early basketball rivalry with Atlantic Christian (now Barton) University. This competition was heightened by the use of a wooden bucket trophy, called “Bohunk” since 1939. The Bohunk Trophy rivalry ended in the 1960s and it was last won by Atlantic Christian College. In 1996, it sat in a trophy case at Barton University, a once cherished trophy and a reminder of ECU’s sporting past.

Abstract:
The old college stadium yielded its final cheers on Nov. 24, 1962. ECTC began its football career in 1932 when C. Kenneth Beatty volunteered to coach 24 college men. They first played in the old baseball diamond where the Austin Building now sits. In 1940 the football team practiced at the new Guy Smith Stadium. In 1949 a stadium holding 3,000 was erected east of the old baseball field, behind what is now Christianbury Gym. The first football game was held on Sept. 15, 1949. The seating grew to 6,000 and in 1960 the first graduation ceremony was held in it and Presidential candidate, John F. Kennedy, gave a speech there. In 1963, a new stadium was built called “Ficklen Stadium.” The old college stadium stands were removed and placed on the north side of Ficklen Stadium.
