In 2016, a new public television series called Reel South will air on UNC-TV and other public channels across the South. The series is a collaboration between UNC-TV, the Southern Documentary Fund, and South Carolina Educational Television and includes documentaries about the American South, not just North Carolina.

Old time Appalachian musician Roger Howell recorded a collection of fiddle tunes in 2007 and donated them to the Southern Appalachian Archives. Normally, Appalachian folk sounds are passed down by oral tradition and played by ear. Howell decided to record this part of Appalachian history before it was lost forever.

Nancy Buirski is the founder and director of the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. She started the festival in Durham in 1998; there were 45 documentaries screened and 5,000 tickets were sold. In 2007, over 100 films were screened and a record-setting 26,800 people attended.

Fellerath discusses the eighth annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, held in Durham. The festival had strong ticket sales, and attendees had an opportunity to mingle with producers and directors and view premiere showings of a number of documentary films. Duke University pledged $100,000 for the next three years, making the school the festival's largest cash sponsor.

The Southern Documentary Fund of Durham encourages documentary media projects made within or about the American South. The group serves to help fundraising to support documentary projects and is celebrating its five year anniversary. The group is looking to expand by creating a network for documentary artists to access production resources and distribute their films.
