The North Carolina Coastal Federation is a nonprofit organization that protects the natural North Carolina coast. Formed in 1982 in response to peat miners’ plans to harvest land near the Pamlico and Albemarle sounds, the federation members spend much of their time removing crab pots and other debris from coastal waters.

Retired fisherman Neal “Nicky” Harvey was inspired to put his crab pots to another good use: as foundation for artificial Christmas trees. This decoration is perhaps something only an individual from a fishing village could have created. Sold to a Smyrna businessman and revamped as an online venture, this Carteret County native’s merchandise has found appeal the world over, from countries such as Japan.

Derelict crab pots that litter the North Carolina waterways are being used to build oyster reefs. Turning hazards into habitat is one of the goals of this study that examines the ecological characteristics of natural and restored reefs, and provide ideal locations for restoration.

Diamondback terrapins inhabit the state's estuaries and often get into commercial and recreational crab pots. A research team is tracking the diamondbacks to determine their movements, distribution, and crab pot interactions.
