In light of two recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions affirming the constitutionality of the use of corporal punishment in public schools, parents and school officials in North Carolina may wonder what safeguards remain to ensure that excessive or abusive disciplinary measures are not used in the classroom.

Most states have moved toward statutory bans on corporal punishment or allowing local education boards to prohibit the practice in their areas.
