The survival of a business founded in 1913 can be found in more than its Tarboro location. What has helped the store to survive two major setbacks can also be found in personality traits such as patience and determination. It is such traits that helped build good customer service and community presence for Marrow-Pitt Hardware and its four generations of store owners.

Fresh Market, a family-owned business, opened its first store in Greensboro in the early 1980s. The format of the store is based on a European market and has proven appealing to customers. Whole Foods is its nearest competitor. Fresh Market now has 130 stores in 25 states and 10,000 employees. Net sales topped $1.3 billion last year. Although sales have slipped slightly, the company still plans to open 16 to 22 stores this year, with 4 in Houston in its first foray into Texas.

P. H. Rose created a family business that grew into a retail giant. He started in 1915, in Henderson, opening stores that would eventually bear the name Rose's. During the chain's heyday in the 1960s and 1970s sales grew from $54 million to over $500 million.

Lucius H. Harvin, III, is president and CEO of Rose's Stores, a firm founded by his grandfather, P. H. Rose, in 1915. He is only the fourth person to lead this family-owned retail chain of 240 stores which employ around 13,000 people in thirteen southeastern states. Pope is President, Chairman and CEO of the Raleigh-based company. Stores operating under the Variety banner include Pope, Eagle, United, Value Mart, and Super-Dollar Stores.

In 1962 the Record Bar was a single mom-and-pop store in a dying section of downtown Durham. By 1982, it had grown into the second-largest national retail chain in the record industry with sales in 1981 of $65 million. The retail chain has 136 stores in twenty-eight states.

Mack's Stores, Inc., a variety chain store, began operations in Sanford in December 1923. Today, Mack's operates ninety-six stores in the North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. The company employs over 1,600 and projected sales for 1977 are expected to exceed $45 million.
