In 2016, Sylvan Heights Bird Park received a Student Science Enrichment Program (SSEP) grant from Burroughs-Wellcome Fund to develop and host a three year STEM program, called 'Soaring into Science." The aim was to served 150 rising 9th graders through a collaborative partnership between Sylvan Heights Bird Park and the regional charter schools.

When Burroughs Wellcome was bought out by Glaxo in March, 1995, it left many employees of the pharmaceutical company in doubt about their future. For example, over 1,000 jobs at the Greenville plant could be moved or eliminated.

Burroughs Wellcome Company discovered that the drug AZT can prolong the lives of many people with AIDS, but at an annual cost of about ten-thousand dollars per patient. North Carolina has a share of the federal safety-net program to help AIDS patients who can’t afford AZT. Others who are without federal aid are organizing boycotts against Burroughs and considering lawsuits.

Burroughs Wellcome Company was founded in London in 1880 by two American pharmacists, Silas Burroughs and Henry Wellcome. In the 104 years since its founding, the company has been recognized as a leader in pharmaceutical research and production. Its corporate headquarters in Research Triangle Park also houses its research laboratories, and its manufacturing division is in Greenville, North Carolina.
