Connelly Springs, a small town in Burke County, will soon have drinking water thanks to the assistance from a new program within the Construction Grants and Loans Section of the North Carolina Division of Environmental Management. By 1995, the town will have completed a distribution system that will allow access to the county’s water supply. Construction is being done by residents as part of the loan agreements under the North Carolina Small Community Self-Help Program.

Located southeast of Morganton, the Western Correctional Center is known to insiders as “The High Rise.” Considered North Carolina’s most secure prison for 14-to 18-year-olds, the 16-story fortress houses teenagers who are too young for adult jail or too old for juvenile school.

Senator Sam Ervin, Jr. refutes Bob Brown's theory that the famed Brown Mountain Lights, visible from Ripshin Ridge in Burke County, are merely electric lights from towns across the mountains claiming that sightings of the lights pre-date electric lights a go back as far as the 1760s.

The author provides a scientific explanation for the strange lights that appear over Brown Mountain. The light actually comes from the valley beyond Brown Mountain. When atmospheric conditions are just right, the refraction in the air and moisture cause apparent movement of lights.
