Architects have cited the Reynolds Building, which opened in 1929 as the tobacco company's headquarters, as \"one of the best examples of art deco skyscraper design. \" Developers will spend $50 million turning the 22-story building into 120 apartments on the upper floors and a 211-room hotel on the lower ones. The building will reopen in 2016.

With a modest infusion of funds of between $13 and $15 million, Winston-Salem plans to revitalize its downtown area by focusing on the arts as its primary vehicle. Instead of tearing down and rebuilding, the city will renovate existing structures. For example, the old \"Sawtooth\"Â building, which gets its name from rows of distinctive skylights, will contain exhibition areas for arts and crafts, while an auto dealership building attached to it will contain galleries, restaurants and a small theater.
