Resident Culture Brewing in Charlotte, founded by Phillip McLamb, has been the quickest local brewery to begin canning and has released seven cans in five months. It was also the first local brewery to employ a coolship, which is a large, open-air vessel used for spontaneous fermentation of beer. The brewery’s bestselling craft beers have been created by head brewer, Chris Tropeano.

Wilmington-based startup, Next Glass acquired rights to the California-based app called Untappd in 2016. Untappd uses science and algorithms to provide wine and beer recommendations to users based on their logged taste preferences. After the merge, the company revealed a new product, Untappd for Business, which allows brewers and bars access to the app’s users for promotional purposes.

After North Carolina and other states in the South lifted their laws that limited the alcohol content of craft-brewed beverages, the hard cider industry made a comeback. Two Asheville men, Trevor Baker and Lief Stevens started Nobel Cider in 2012. They use local apples for their hard cider and distribute their product as far east as Charlotte.

Four of North Carolina’s craft breweries won awards at the largest beer competition in the world this year. Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills, Olde Hickory Brewery in Hickory, and Foothill Brewing Co. in Winston-Salem won silver and Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery in Farmville captured a gold. The awards indicate the state’s brewers are growing in skill as well as numbers. The state is now one of the hottest markets for craft beer.

The number of microbreweries, which produce a maximum of 15,000 barrels yearly, increased in 1994 from two to seven statewide. Tim and Susan Johnson left high-paying jobs to move to Charlotte to become microbrewers in this growing industry.
