George Attmore Sparrow, oldest son of Thomas Sparrow III and Ann Maria Blackwell, was born in Beaufort, North Carolina in 1845 and became a minister in the late 1880s. George’s family has a long history of prominence in eastern North Carolina. Personal letters George wrote to his father are presented in this journal issue.

The discount stores owned by Art Pope and the cheap merchandise he sells at them are detailed. Pope’s stores target minority individuals in low-income areas. Pope’s family history, business model, his millions of dollars in political contributions, and his ultra-conservative political philosophy are also discussed in depth. Seven toys and clothing products from which Pope makes millions off of in his store are shown and connections are drawn between them and Pope’s political views.

Most people think of the 20th century as the American century, but a new book proclaims it as the North Carolina century. The NORTH CAROLINA CENTURY: TAR HEELS WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE, 1900-2000 is published by the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte as a product of the North Carolina Biography Project. It profiles mostly individuals, ranging from early-century education leader William Poteat to late-century sports superstar Michael Jordan.
