What happened to Belmont was common in many Southern states: the loss of mills due to factors such as outsourcing. This small city survived losing its former occupational and economic lifeblood by mill buildings becoming condos, apartments, and retail outlets; capitalizing on its proximity to Charlotte; a generous infusion of Millennial aged entrepreneurial spirit.

Belmont Abbey College in Gaston County opened its doors in 1876. Founded on Benedictine tenets and staffed by Benedictine monks, the college continues to grow and prosper in modern society.

Abstract:
The sharp spires of Belmont Abbey cathedral near Belmont, North Carolina from the nucleus of a colony that is apart from the surrounding countryside. An energetic and gallant band of Benedictine monks are keeping alive the 1,400 year old doctrines of America's oldest abbey.

Abstract:
A group of Benedictine monks from St. Vincent's Abbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, moved to Belmont in 1876. On October 18, 1886, they began building St. Mary's College and in 1892, construction started on the cathedral. In was dedicated two years later by Cardinal Gibbons and by order of Pope Pius X, became the first Cathedral Abbey in America. It stands as an example of Gothic architecture built of brick with granite trim.
