The Aurora Fossil Museum, located in Aurora, North Carolina, was founded in 1976 and was the first fossil museum in the region. The museum displays the fossils uncovered in phosphate deposits in the area. In 2016, the museum celebrates its fortieth anniversary and its rich history in educational outreach and promoting geology.

Charles Thrasher moved from California to Chocowinity and has since taken an avid interest in photographing the beauty of local swamps. Focus of this sketch is a wetland near Cherry Run Road outside of Washington. All photos are taken from his fiberglass kayak. He hopes to change people's negative perceptions of swamps. His work is currently documented in a Facebook group he created last year titled Beaufort County NC Photography.

The Aurora Fossil Museum in Beaufort County is one of the last non-admission museums in the state and last year, had at least one visitor from every state. The recent addition the PotashCorp Mine Room is hoped to attract even more visitors to the museum and the local Fossil Festival held annually in May. This year the museum will be raffling off a megalodon shark tooth to support the festival.

Veteran Captain Richard Andrews describes the prize of late-summer fishing on the Pamlico—the giant red drum. As North Carolina’s state fish, the giant red drum are large; typically between 35 and 52 inches long and weigh one pound in weight per inch in length, which makes them difficult to catch.

This state park offers a site for expected outdoor activities: birding, canoeing, kayaking, and camping. Offerings perhaps unexpected include a public beach, outdoor classrooms, and an auditorium. As for a past benefit that’s unexpected, it is its Tar Kiln Trail, a major producer of pine tar for the area during the 18th and 19th centuries.
