In recent years, the need for energy storage has grown and sparked new efforts to find the better battery. The North Carolina Association of Electric Cooperatives and Four County Electric Membership Corporation are road testing plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). These cars use larger, more powerful lithium-ion batteries that can be charged overnight from a standard outlet.

Union Carbide Corporation, maker of Everyready batteries, opened a plant in Charlotte twenty years ago. Plants at Asheboro and Greenville would soon follow. The state's three battery-making plants employ around 1,200 with an annual payroll of $5 million.

National Carbon Co., one of the oldest divisions of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation and leading manufacturer of carbon products, ferro-alloys and metals, gasses and organo-silicon chemicals, synthetic chemicals, and plastics, has three battery plants in Charlotte, Asheboro, and Greenville. The three plants employ over 900 employees and produce a variety of battery types.
