Abstract:
As a growing city, construction is a part of life in Charlotte. Architect David Furman has designed buildings and spaces in Charlotte since the 1990s when his firm, The Boulevard Company, became a development company. At first, he designed infill sites near Uptown, but since, he has designed the 1616 Center office building, housing communities for the homeless, and the Rail Trail in South End that follows the Light Rail tracks—all proposed with the community in mind.

The Charlotte architectural firm of Lee Nichols Architecture received the AIA North Carolina Firm Award for 2000. The award is given to the firm producing quality architecture and having a high level of customer satisfaction for a ten-year period. The firm was founded in 1969.

Lee Nichols Helper Architecture, a Charlotte firm, received the 1996 Kamphoefner Prize. This is the first time a firm and not an individual received the award, which is named for North Carolina State University School of Design founder, Henry Kamphoefner.

When it came to covering construction costs, this Charlotte based firm proved that satisfying customers, rather than sating professional ego, was foremost on their minds. As for satisfaction not alluded to in the title, that extends to the employees, particularly those of the Gen X set. Because of this, Little and Associates amply proved their bottom line was professional and personal fulfillment, not company profit.
