Abstract:
It is an honor for a state to have a city named an All-American City. This year's competition in Denver had twenty finalists. North Carolina had three chosen to receive the award--Dunn, Garner, and Thomasville. The award recognizes projects that solve community problems. This year the contest spotlighted projects that honor veterans and their families.

The town of Southern Pines, NC was announced as a finalist for the All-America City Award, which focuses on improving reading proficiency by third-grade. As one of the 32 finalists, Southern Pines has the opportunity to be awarded access to resources and potential funding that concentrates on early childhood literacy and learning.

Gastonia won the prestigious National Civic League's All America City & Community Award for 2010. The award is given to communities that identify problems and solve them. Only ten awards are presented nationwide. Gastonia first won the award in 1963 and again in 2000.

The All-America City Award, presented by the National Civic League, annually recognizes communities that engage in creative collaborative problem solving, inclusiveness, successful innovation and civic improvement. In North Carolina, Lenoir and Reidsville received the award for 2008.

In the All-America City competition, North Carolina cities and towns have a strong record. Since 1949, twenty-nine state municipalities and two counties have received the designation. Clinton and Hickory were two of the ten award winners nationwide in the 2007 All-America City Award program, which annually recognizes communities that engage in creative collaborative problem solving and civic improvement. This is Hickory's third time to receive the award, joining twenty-eight other cities that have done so. Asheville and Laurinburg are also triple winners in North Carolina.

Some have won the award more than once. Only California has more winners with thirty-six. Concord was one of the ten award winners nationwide in the 2004 All-America City Award program, which annually recognizes communities that engage in creative collaborative problem solving and civic improvement.

The All-America City Award, a program of the 106- year-old National Civic League, annually honors ten communities best exemplifying grassroots citizen involvement and collaborative problem solving. Gastonia is an All-America city for 2000. New Bern was one of the thirty finalists. Gastonia previously won the award in 1963, and New Bern was a winner in 1989.

Rocky Mount was one of ten cities nationwide named an All-America City by the National Civic League. Morganton and Hickory were finalists. Rocky Mount received the distinction for its community-building approaches to social and economic challenges. The award started in 1949. In the past fifty years twenty-seven North Carolina cities have been named All-America Cities. Only California has more winners with thirty-six.

Abstract:
The National Municipal League and Look Magazine have designated Winston-Salem an All-America City. This is the third North Carolina municipality to receive the award. Asheville won in 1951, and Laurinburg won in 1956. Most cities win the award largely on the basis of one project, but Winston-Salem won for its work on eight projects.
