The US Department of Justice sent undercover observers to monitor the polls in Alamance County. Some have speculated that observers were sent after an illegal immigrant in Alamance County was arrested for forging documents obtained through a potential leak by health care officials. Several politicians in the county also ran on anti-immigrant platforms who have raised the question of illegal voting. Observers were present to make sure there were no problems at the polls and the Voting Rights Act was observed.

The Alamance County Sherriff Terry Johnson and his office are under investigation by US Department of Justice over allegations that his office targets Latinos in traffic stops and checkpoints. The statistics support those allegations and there are concerns over civil rights violations. The sheriff's department claim they are following the law and Alamance County is a prime drug trafficking point for cartels. The department, its leadership, their actions, and the concerns of local citizens are explored.

Immigration court observers say government prosecutors continue to drop deportation cases in Alamance County. The amount of cases dropped is uncertain, but one estimate is over 24 cases have been dropped since September. The Department of Justice has been investigating the Alamance County Sheriff's office and has reported that the sheriff’s targeted Latino drivers and violated civil rights laws. Some activists believe a lawsuit is soon forthcoming against the department.

After a U.S. Department of Justice investigation brought up racial profiling charges, deportation cases have been dropped in Alamance County. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have dropped six cases since the report was presented on September 18th.

Abstract:
Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson is alleged by the U.S. Department of Justice to be guilty of racially profiling and misconduct. For years, Johnson has been accused by civil rights advocates of targeting and arresting Latino residents in an effort to spur deportations. A District Court judge will soon rule on the alleged pattern of discrimination of Latino residents under the direction of Johnson.
