Abstract:
The federal Conservation Reserve Program is the most successful agricultural conservation program ever passed. Begun for soil protection, it created the greatest wildlife boom since the 1950s. However, the 1995 Farm Bill may curtail its success.

Local governments in North Carolina are taking advantage of water supply and water quality protection opportunities offered by the State’s Agricultural Cost Share Program by supplementing funding for local technical assistance. The program currently shares with farmers the cost of installing runoff controls for watershed conservation.

Abstract:
Concern for disappearing prime agricultural land to development was a major concern for legislators after a national report called the National Agricultural Lands Study released in 1981. State representatives met at the bequest of Governor Hunt on December 17, 1981 at North Carolina State University for the Conference on Retention of Prime and Important Farm and Forest Lands. The article reviews the rate at which the state was losing agricultural lands to development and ways to conserve the state's natural and agricultural assets.
